Beyond warmth and enjoyment, a new unit can be a great investment. According to the National Association of Home Builders, new home buyers count fireplaces among the top three features they’re looking for in a new home. By installing or updating a fireplace or stove, you may also be adding value, should you decide to sell your home.

According to the National Association of Realtors, a new, attractive fireplace can increase the value of a home by 10% – each!

Fireplaces, Stoves, and Inserts — What’s The Difference?

  • Fireplaces – A traditional masonry fireplace will be built into a hearth, with an opening in the front. But newer, prefabricated fireplaces offer an array of choices, from the more traditional-looking to fireplaces with glass surrounds, visible on all four sides.
  • Stoves – Rather than being built into a hearth, stoves are free-standing, and can also come in a variety of looks, from more traditional cast iron to sleek and contemporary steel designs.
  • Inserts – An insert is designed to be installed into a masonry or a factory-built fireplace, to improve the look and/or efficiency of the older unit. These can make use of your existing chimney and are capable of heating a space efficiently. Inserts typically have fans that circulate the heated air and thermostats that can help maintain the desired temperature. Flue modifications are sometimes required with insert installation, but vent-free inserts that don’t require any flue changes are also available.

Choose Between Different Fuel Sources

Depending on what you plan to use your unit for, you can choose from several different fuel sources. Fuel choice typically depends upon desired heat output, efficiency, and maintenance, among other factors.

  • Gas Fireplaces, Stoves, Inserts, Gas Logs – Many homeowners choose gas-burning fireplaces, stoves, and inserts for convenience, but they also burn clean. According to the EPA, gas-burning appliances emit much fewer air pollutants than appliances that burn other fuels.
  • Wood-burning Fireplaces, Inserts, and Stoves – Wood provides a beautiful and traditional fireplace or stove experience, with the warmth, sounds, and smells that come with a crackling fire. They do, however, require you to chop and/or haul wood, and produce more smoke and soot than other fuel choices.
  • Pellet Stoves and Inserts – Pellet stoves and inserts use compressed pellets made largely of ground-up wood, and the EPA considers these to be among the cleanest, most efficient, wood-burning heating options. Unlike a wood-burning stove or fireplace, these use electricity to feed pellets into the stove.
  • Electric Fireplaces, Stoves, and Inserts – Electric fireplaces, stoves & inserts offer placement options, year-round enjoyment, and ease of use. Plus, they come in a variety of styles and can be a cost-effective way of spicing up your space. If you’re looking for a unit that you can relocate as needed or flip on to add ambiance any time of year, electric may be the perfect thing for you.
