Refractory Firebox Rebuild
Your masonry chimney was built with durable materials like brick, mortar, concrete, stone — materials that, when properly installed and maintained, can withstand decade upon decade of use. Masonry chimneys are also visually timeless — whether your home’s design is classic or modern, masonry chimneys can be a striking part of its look.
Even the most durable materials require maintenance and attention to stay functioning and looking their best, and masonry is no different. Bricks and mortar soak up water like a sponge, so the effects of rain and the expansion and contraction of seeped-in water can take their toll. Bricks and joints may deteriorate and crack, concrete may begin to flake and chip, etc. In addition to being visually unappealing, these issues will keep your chimney from effectively protecting your home and family from the harmful byproducts of combustion.
When masonry problems arise, call Home Safe Hearth & Chimney — whether you need to repair cracks or rebuild your entire chimney, our experienced technicians can do the job.
Common Masonry Repair Work
- Repointing/Tuckpointing – If the mortar in your chimney’s joints has begun to deteriorate, you may need repointing or tuckpointing work. Pointing is no small job: It requires painstaking removal of the decaying mortar and replacement with new mortar that matches the original look and structural qualities. This can be particularly complex with older homes because the materials used in masonry work have changed considerably through the years. Modern brick is much harder than the brick used in historic homes, and modern mortar is less water permeable and more rigid. If you were to just add new bricks and new mortar to a damaged chimney, without taking into account the composition of the original masonry, you could compromise its structural integrity. Masonry materials need to work in harmony, and it takes training and experience to do pointing work correctly. We’ve been repairing and restoring chimneys in the Wichita area since 1979, and can bring your chimney back to its structural and visual best.
- Spalling repair – If water gets into masonry or mortar and then freezes and expands, it can cause spalling, or flaking, and chipping. At Home Safe Hearth & Chimney Inc. we can repair your spalling masonry or mortar and we also offer water repellent options that can help your repaired masonry or mortar last even longer.

Making Repairs Now Can Help You Avoid A Rebuild
Small masonry problems can become big problems faster than you might think. Small cracks or gaps in your masonry will allow water better access to your chimney, and as water makes its way further in, more cracks, gaps, and deterioration will show up. Before you know it, you could be facing a full chimney rebuild.
The first step in making sure that you are properly maintaining your masonry chimney is to schedule your annual chimney inspection. Home Safe Hearth & Chimney technicians will locate areas in need of repair during an inspection and can recommend the best course of action.
If you see cracks or crumbling masonry between inspections, call us: We can repair those problems before they get worse.
